The comprehensive programme lays the foundation for knowledge in science with a choice of 11 Science Majors, 7 Intensive Majors, and options to add non-science courses. After two years, you will be required to choose your Major with the flexibility to change. You may also opt to take a 2nd Major or Minor or 2nd Minors in Science and non-science disciplines.
Your choice of Intensive Majors includes Biological sciences, Chemistry, Ecology and Biodiversity, Geology, Mathematics, Molecular Biology and Biotechnology, and Physics.
HKU’s Young Scientists Scheme opens the door for early entry into research experiences for outstanding students. Successful applicants benefit from mentorship, research fellowships, exclusive experiential learning placements, and global exchange opportunities at respected universities like Cambridge, Stanford, and Yale.
Your degree also lays the groundwork to pursue a postgraduate degree at HKU or further afield. Alternatively, take advantage of our articulation pathway to the University of Melbourne (UoMelb) to earn a BSc degree from HKU and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from UoMelb over seven years of study.
Six majors in the programme are accredited by professional bodies, enabling graduates to specialise locally and internationally in some cases. The Intensive Major in Chemistry is accredited by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) UK, Intensive Majors in Biological Sciences, Ecology and Biodiversity, and Molecular Biology and Biotechnology by the Royal Society of Biology (RSB) UK, the Intensive Major in Geology by the Geological Society of London (GSL) UK, and the Major of Environmental Science by Hong Kong Institute of Qualified Environmental Professionals.
The Faculty has had an essentially 100% employment rate (including further studies) in the past decade. In particular, by equipping the students with in-depth knowledge and skills to tackle intricate and novel challenges posed by Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) issues, many of our majors have proven to be especially effective in nurturing ESG talents. As the importance of ESG continues to grow globally, our majors provide students with a manifest edge in the job market and the ability to impact their chosen field positively.
Some of our graduates have worked as environmental scientists, nutritionists, clinical scientists, meteorologists, geologists, information specialists, financial analysts, teachers, and forensic scientists. Others have ventured into business and management to apply their strong numerical analytical and logical thinking skills. Past employers of HKU science graduates include reputable organisations like AIA Group, Gammon Construction, Goldman Sachs, Hong Kong Observatory, Hong Kong Space Museum, Hong Kong Science Museum, and Prudential, among many others.
