Programme Introduction
Mechanical engineering is a crucial field in the design and development of engineering systems with moving parts. The BEng degree in Mechanical Engineering equips graduates with the necessary expertise and skills to succeed in the profession. The program covers a broad range of engineering science knowledge, including thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, solid mechanics, materials technology, dynamics, and control. Students can specialize in areas of their interest, such as aeronautical engineering, biomedical engineering, control and robotics, energy and environment, mechanics and materials, nanotechnology, product design and manufacture, and thermo-fluids.
What You’ll Study
The emphasis in the first two years is on the basic engineering science subjects such as thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, mechanics of solids, materials technology, dynamics and control. In the final year, students specialize in areas such as aeronautical engineering, biomedical engineering, control and robotics, energy and environment, mechanics and materials, nanotechnology, product design and manufacture, and thermo-fluids, or to study in-depth the basic subjects learned earlier. Six focus areas, robotics, drones and control, aerospace engineering, intelligent built environment, materials science and engineering, environmental engineering, energy engineering are provided for students’ specialization.
Exciting Opportunities
The programme enables students to develop solid foundations in engineering through active learning, capstone experience, hands-on activities, internship and exchanges studies. Students also have the chance to participate in experiential learning activities in the form of local and international competitions like the British Model Flying Association University/Schools Flight Challenge, Formula Student UK, and Formula SAE Japan.
Professional Recognition
The degree programme is accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE), and our graduates are eligible to pursue professional qualifications (e.g. Registered Professional Engineer) from the HKIE or from other overseas institutions.
Career Prospect
Graduates are prepared to pursue various career paths, including research and development, manufacturing, design, and consulting. They may also choose to pursue further education, such as a master's or doctoral degree, to specialize in a particular area of mechanical engineering. Mechanical engineering is a growing field with excellent career prospects. Graduates can work in industries such as aerospace, automotive, medical, and energy, as well as in emerging fields like nanotechnology, robotics, and renewable energy. The demand for mechanical engineers is high and expected to grow in the coming years. Some graduates may choose to work in non-engineering sectors such as business, education, social and community.
